Astral Projection Newsletter November 3, 04
Dear OBE MEMBERS,
This newsletter has turned out to be rather lengthy. However, I wanted to share some of my observations and experiences with you. I have decided to break the newsletter into two parts. Please look forward to the second half of this newsletter next month.
Many people have expressed interest concerning my life in China. Every day continues to be a new adventure. The language barrier is the most difficult obstacle I confront on a daily basis. Few Chinese speak English, so I have just completed forty hours of Mandarin language lessons. I have found that learning the language is a difficult endeavor at best, but a very good challenge.
The following "snap shots" of the country are only a small sampling of what I have experienced living in Shanghai. I have included "images" that are not on the travel channel in order to give you a feel for the "real" china that most people will never see. This newsletter will be different from the norm, I will be focusing on observations I have made in China.
IMAGES OF SHANGHAI
My first few days in Shanghai are surreal. I vividly recall driving through the crowded streets of Shanghai while listening to Willie Nelson and John Denver on the radio. My driver assumed all Americans listened to country music.
In general Americans are well liked. On many occasions, locals have approached me and asked me were I am from. When I respond USA, they give me a big smile and a thumbs up. Most wear western clothes and many sport English logos or sayings, for example Mickey Mouse and Nike are popular. All of
the locals watch counterfeit American movies, and at least to some small degree, appear to base their perceptions of America upon these distorted Hollywood images.
While shopping in an antique store in the middle of the day, I wander into a back room and suddenly find myself in a smoke filled illegal gambling den. It appears like a scene from a movie. Before me are a group of intense hard looking men sitting around a table with cigarettes hanging from their mouths. On the table is a large pile of money, beer bottles and playing cards. For a moment they freeze and stare at me as if I just landed from another planet, I mumble something stupid like "oops", and then I smile and quickly step backwards out the gambling room. I learned later that gambling for money in China is illegal but very popular.
While driving through the outskirts of the city, I see the haunting sight of an old man walking hand and hand with his three-year-old grand son through a rancid trash dump. I enter a modern upscale shopping mall and see a forty-year-old man standing in front of a trendy Hugo Boss store wearing Mickey Mouse pajamas. Now that summer is in full gear, it is hot and humid (92 -100 degrees) every day. The sight of pajamas and nightgowns in public places are common occurrences. For some people it’s really easy to get dressed in the morning. You never know, this cutting edge fashion may spread to your city.
In general, crime is a very rare event. I feel safe to walk anywhere in the city, even at night. Unlike the U.S., criminals in China receive fast trials and swifter justice. Murderers and rapists are executed within weeks after their conviction. These weekly executions are reported in detail within the local paper. During a recent party I attended, a couple of locals made jokes about the ineffective American criminal system and the ridiculous show trials of the rich and famous. They find it completely insane to feed and house a convicted murderer.
Even though public spitting is officially outlawed, it appears to be a sort of national sport for men. On several occasions, I have been in small shops and the shopkeepers will loudly spit, even on their own floor. My wife and I have a warning code for this behavior when it is close to us, "Incoming".
***Please watch for the second half of this newsletter next month. Thank you very much for your words of encouragement and support during our move to China.
All my best,
